KDE 4.X and Fedora 9+: Problems starting xserver after changing video settings.

Problems with Fedora 9 and above and KDE. 

PROBLEM

When initially logging in to the new Fedora 9 following the upgrade, KDE 4.0 GUI started but all my settings were gone.  Except for my documents that I had in various places, the settings and configuration like KDE themes I had installed earlier, were now gone.  After about two reboots where after I played with KDE settings for display resolution, KDE refused to start and I had to press:

RedHat Fedora: Fedora 8 to Fedora 9 upgrade.

The Fedora 8 to Fedora 9 upgrade follows the general procedure outlined on the very first Fedora Core upgrade page:

RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 1 to Fedora Core 2 Upgrade .  If you have not already upgraded to F8 please visit  RedHat Fedora: Fedora 7 to Fedora 8 upgrade. page first before going up to FC9.

You will only need to replace step 8 ) with the below step:

8 ) Install fedora-relese either using the RPM’s in step 2) below or use another mirror from the fedora.redhat.com site.  You can also use the mirrors from fedoralegacy.org if your distribution is too old.

Upgrading to Fedora 9 is straightforward, in theory, and follows only a few basic steps below however there are some considerations which you may wish to review.  If you're feeling lucky, you can just skip to THE BASIC STEPS further down.

RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 4 to Fedora Core 5 upgrade.

The upgrade here really hasn't changed from the previous ones all that much and the Fedora Core 4 to Fedora Core 5 upgrade is nearly identical to the first upgrade outlined in: RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 1 to Fedora Core 2 Upgrade .  If you have not already upgraded to FC4 please visit RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 3 to Fedora Core 4 upgrade. page first before going up to FC5.

You will only need to replace step #8 with the below step: 8 ) Install fedora-relese either using http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/4/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/fedora-release-4-2.noarch.rpm or use another mirror from the fedora.redhat.com site.  You can also use the mirrors from fedoralegacy.org if your distribution is too old.

The procedure for this upgrade follows the same steps outlined in: RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 1 to Fedora Core 2 Upgrade with the exception of the below step.  If you have not already upgraded to FC3 please visit RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 2 to Fedora Core 3 upgrade. page first before going up to FC4.

You will only need to replace step #8 with the below step: 8 ) Install fedora-relese either using http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/4/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/fedora-release-4-2.noarch.rpm or http://fedora.osmirror.nl/core/4/ppc/os/Fedora/RPMS/fedora-release-4-2.noarch.rpm or use another mirror from the fedora.redhat.com site. For more legacy mirrors, use the instructions on the Fedora Core 1 to Fedora Core 2 upgrade above.

RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 2 to Fedora Core 3 upgrade.

Now that you are at Fedora Core 2 you can jump to Fedora Core 3 as the next step.  For those of you who have been using Fedora Core 2 and have not read Fedora Core 1 to Fedora Core 2 Upgrade please take a look.  The procedures here are identical except for some minor changes. 
 

You should pay attention to the versions in the article replacing 2 for 3 and 1 for 2 (In that order).  Otherwise the general procedure on the above link is the same except for the following item:
 

8 ) Install fedora-relese either using http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/3/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/fedora-release-3-8.i386.rpm or use another mirror from the fedora.redhat.com site.  You can also use the mirrors from fedoralegacy.org if your distribution is too old as well as refer to the first upgrade from Fedora Core 1 to Fedora Core 2 above for more in legacy links.

RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 1 to Fedora Core 2 Upgrade

For those of you still stuck in the old archeic version of Fedora Core 4 or older, perhaps because you have lot's of files stored and documents and do not wish to reinstall the entire OS: it may be time to consider an upgrade.  Thankfully there is a way to do this from Fedora Core 1 to the latest Fedora available.  The only drawback it that it may take a while.  You would need to upgrade through each version to the latest Fedora which can take a very long time.
