{"id":38,"date":"2008-07-07T20:03:55","date_gmt":"2008-07-08T00:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.microworkshop.com\/WordPress\/?p=38"},"modified":"2012-12-01T19:19:12","modified_gmt":"2012-12-02T00:19:12","slug":"redhat-fedora-fedora-core-4-to-fedora-core-5-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microdevsys.com\/wp\/redhat-fedora-fedora-core-4-to-fedora-core-5-upgrade\/","title":{"rendered":"RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 4 to Fedora Core 5 upgrade."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tThe upgrade here really hasn&#39;t changed from the previous ones all that much and the <strong>Fedora Core 4<\/strong> to <strong>Fedora Core 5<\/strong> upgrade is nearly identical to the first upgrade outlined in: <a href=\"http:\/\/microdevsys.com\/wp\/redhat-fedora-core-1-to-fedora-core-2-upgrade\/\">RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 1 to Fedora Core 2 Upgrade<\/a> .&nbsp; If you have not already upgraded to <strong>FC4<\/strong> please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/microdevsys.com\/wp\/redhat-fedora-fedora-core-3-to-fedora-core-4-upgrade\/\">RedHat Fedora: Fedora Core 3 to Fedora Core 4 upgrade.<\/a> page first before going up to <strong>FC5<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tYou will only need to replace step <strong>#8<\/strong> with the below step: <strong>8 ) <\/strong>Install fedora-relese either using&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/download.fedora.redhat.com\/pub\/fedora\/linux\/core\/4\/i386\/os\/Fedora\/RPMS\/fedora-release-4-2.noarch.rpm\" rel=\"external nofollow\">http:\/\/download.fedora.redhat.com\/pub\/fedora\/linux\/core\/4\/i386\/os\/Fedora\/RPMS\/fedora-release-4-2.noarch.rpm<\/a> or use another mirror from the <a href=\"http:\/\/fedora.redhat.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">fedora.redhat.com<\/a> site.&nbsp; You can also use the mirrors from <a href=\"http:\/\/fedoralegacy.org\/\" rel=\"external nofollow\">fedoralegacy.org<\/a> if your distribution is too old.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWe are also going to save the output of the upgrade process into a log file in case we need to analyze for more details.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>THE UPGRADE PROCESS <\/strong> <strong> <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<!--more--><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 153, 102);\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>1)<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Remove any old kernels. Myself I had about 7 kernels from prior installations so I removed all but 2 of them. This will help you avoid any dependency problems or package errors you might have otherwise receive. Use either <strong>yum<\/strong> or <strong>rpm<\/strong> to do this with:\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n\t<strong>$ yum remove kernel-&lt;YOUR KERNEL DETAILS&gt; <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOR\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n\t<strong>$ rpm -e kernel-&lt;YOUR KERNEL DETAILS&gt;<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color: rgb(51, 153, 102);\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>2)<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Run <strong>yum clean all<\/strong> before starting the upgrade.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color: rgb(51, 153, 102);\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>3)<\/strong><\/span><\/span> Update\/install the fedora-release for <strong>Fedora Core 5<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n\t<strong>$ rpm -Uhv http:\/\/download.fedora.redhat.com\/pub\/fedora\/linux\/core\/5\/i386\/os\/Fedora\/RPMS\/fedora-release-5-5.noarch.rpm <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n\tIn case you can&#39;t find the &#39;<strong>fedora-release-5-5.noarch.rpm<\/strong>&#39; off Fedora site, post a comment and I&#39;ll link mine here or see the above initial note on <strong>FC1<\/strong> to <strong>FC2<\/strong> upgrade above with regards to legacy kernel upgrades which may no longer be supported.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>4)<\/strong> Run the actual upgrade:\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n\t<strong>$ nice -n 19 yum -y update 2&gt;&amp;1|tee .\/upgrade-fc4-to-fc5.log<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>5)<\/strong> Watch out for messages and dependency problems. In my case I had installed a bunch of third party applications, some not from RPM. This broke the upgrade. To avoid problems and a long winded installation\/upgrade, I simply uninstalled the packages. For libraries the upgrade complained about, I used &#8211;<strong>-whatprovides<\/strong> switch:\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">\n\t<strong>rpm -q &#8211;whatprovides<\/strong><br \/>\n\t<strong>rpm -qa xffm<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tand the name of the module that &#39;yum&#39; complained about.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>6)<\/strong> Prior to upgrading, I had customized my video card to use <strong>fglrx<\/strong> which I wanted back ASA my upgrade completed. This produced amazing results for my video performance to something like (literally) 10x the acceleration I had. Unfortunately, the version for <strong>FC5<\/strong> was, apparently, no longer available.
